Ozbek

The Ozbek ethnic group, with a population of 14,502, mainly live in Yining, Tacheng, and Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The Ozbek ethnic group has its own language which belongs to Turki Austronesian of the Altai Phylum. Ozbek characters are phonetic words based on the Arabian alphabet. Most Ozbek people use the Uygur language.

The Ozbeks believe in Islam and their ancesters moved to China from the Middle Asia in very ancient times.

In Yuan Dynasty, a number of Ozbek merchants traveled along “the silk road” through Xinjiang to do business in inland areas. Some of them settled in certain cities in Xinjiang. In the 1850s, the Qing Dynasty unified Xinjing. More and more Ozbeks in the Middle Asia, especially the businessmen, came to China. Untile the first several years of the 20 th century, the Ozbeks stil kept moving to China. Besides the businessmen, there were also handicraftsmen and peasants. Most Ozbek people are city dwellers. They mainly engage in trade, education, science, and handcraft industries.
